President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and other 2019 presidential aspirants of Northern extraction are to face a mock election to be conducted by the leadership of Northern youths.
The mock election, which the governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, former governors Sule Lamido, Ahmed Makarfi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are all listed as participants, is expected to produce a single and acceptable candidate that will be backed by the youths for the 2019 poll.
The Northern youths under the umbrella of Arewa Consultative Youth Movement, which disclosed this, yesterday, in Abuja, said the aim was to give the country a candidate that would not only unify it but also obey the rule of law as well as rebuild the country.
Kabiru Yusuf, President of the organisation, in his acceptance speech shortly after he was re-elected to head the body, noted that the decision was borne out of the need for the region to have one candidate in the 2019 election. Yusuf said the election will be conducted online on the organisation’s website. He said: “Several politicians and aspirants have indicated and are indicating interest in the forth coming 2019 presidential election. In this regard, we have shortlisted notable likely presidential materials from the North.
“They include President Buhari; Atiku Abubakar; Aminu Tambuwal; Rabiu Kwankwaso; Ibrahim Dankwambo, Sule Lamido and Ahmed Makarfi. “We shall, in due course, conduct a mock election with a view to feeling the pulse of the Arewa Youths and then decide on the most prospective candidate. The mock election will soon commence on our website and will last for a period of 60 days before the announcement of results.
“I enjoin all of us to think critically about this before we make our choice and also mobilize for it.” He said there cannot be a better chance for Northern youths to contribute to the country the kind of leadership it truly deserves in the 21 century, adding: “The essence of this mock election is to ensure that Arewa youths give their support to a youth-friendly candidate who shares the visions of the Nigerian youths towards a developed and a united Nigeria.”
