Several key Chelsea stars fear Eden Hazard could quit the club this summer as a result of the club’s inactivity in the transfer market, according to the Evening Standard. The FA Cup holders remain in a state of limbo with Antonio Conte still in situ and the club yet to agree a deal with Napoli for Maurizio Sarri.
Chelsea are reluctant to pay up Conte’s salary in full and have been haggling over the compensation fee Napoli would be, despite the fact Carlo Ancelotti has already been employed as his successor.
Chelsea have made an equally sluggish start to this summer’s dealings, while rivals Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have already made several noteworthy additions to their squads.
The Evening Standard claims a club insider fears a repeat of 12 months ago would result in Sarri, or whoever succeeds Conte, inheriting a squad not fit for purpose and facing the impossible task of persuading Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois to commit their futures to the club.
Courtois’ contract expires in little over 12 months’ time and has been targeted by a number of heavyweight European clubs, with the 26-year-old confessing he would consider a return to Spain. Hazard, meanwhile, has an additional year on his current deal but set alarm bells ringing yesterday by flirting with Real Madrid.
