A Benue State Upper Area Court sitting in Makurdi, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of a 27-year-old man, John Agada, in police custody.
The police had charged Agada, who lives at Ampia, Rice Mill area of Otukpo for alleged criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Veronica Shaagee, told the court that on July 22, 2020, one Awuna Terkumbur of Aliade, Gwer East Local Government Area of the state, reported a case of robbery at the police station.
Terkumbur said on July 2, 2020, he conveyed a man, whose name and address was unknown to him, on his unregistered Bajaj motorcycle with chassis number MD2A18AYILWK from Aliade to the house of Agada, who later introduced themselves as in-laws.
The prosecutor stated, “After the introduction, they asked him (Terkumbur) to convey them to a car dealer in Otukpo to buy a car and as soon as they arrived, the said John Agada and his in-law conspired together and robbed him of his motorcycle worth N248,000.
“During police investigation, the said John Agada was arrested for committing the offence, while his in-law is still at large.”
Shaagee added that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 6(b) and 1(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act, 2004.
The defendant’s plea was not taken.
The presiding judge, Mrs Rose Iorshe, however, granted the application made by the prosecutor that the case be adjourned till another date as investigation into the matter was still ongoing.
She ordered that the accused person be remanded in the police detention facility in Makurdi and adjourned the case till August 27, 2020, for further mention.
