NUJ Condemns Political Situation In Benue

The Benue State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned in strong terms, what it described as “political rascality” currently going on in the state.

In a communiqué signed by its Drafting Committee Chairman, Frank Ihundu, and Secretary, Jennifer Gyanggyang, and made available to The Guardian, yesterday, in Makurdi, the union stated that the tense political situation, which attributed to the political class, enjoined the political actors involved in the crisis to employ dialogue, due process and the rule of law to resolve their differences.

The statement said the renewed attacks, killings and massive influx of herds in Guma and Logo Councils of the state were affront on the sensibility of the law abiding and innocent citizens of Benue and highly condemnable.

It called on Federal Government, to as a matter of urgency, rise up to the challenge and arrest the ugly situation by preventing it from degenerating beyond control.

The NUJ also condemned the occupation of the state House of Assembly by security personnel and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene by ordering their vacation of the assembly premises to pave way for smooth legislative proceedings.

It further stated that henceforth, all press conferences must be held at the NUJ Secretariat for accountability and to give credibility to stories generated from such events.
