Gunmen numbering about ten on Saturday invaded Okpoga town, headquarters of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing seven people, including a policeman.
Report gathered that the gunmen invaded a bar in the ancient city and shot indiscriminately, resulting in the death of the victims.
It was also gathered that several people sustained injury from the melee that ensued.
However, the police in the state confirmed that six persons were killed.
Reacting to the development, the state police spokesman, DSP Moses Yamu confirmed the report and said that police promptly responded to gunshots at the relaxation centre.
“Sporadic gunshots was heard at a beer parlour around Okpoga roundabout yesterday (Saturday) at about 9pm, our men swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel which forced them to flee.
“However, six (6) persons including a Police Sergeant who was on mufti were killed in the beer parlour before Police arrived the scene,” Yamu said.
